It is imperative to ensure global climate neutrality by mid-century and keep the 1.5°C goal within reach
The main goal of the COP26 presidency is to ensure global climate neutrality (global net zero) by mid-century, keeping the 1.5°C goal within reach.
The Amazon forest is an essential part of this effort, as it is the cradle of the largest hydrographic basin in the world and plays a central role in combating climate change, ensuring rainfall for most of South America.
Constraining the 1.5°C increase in the global temperature is a feasible and scientifically-backed goal
According to the IPCC – Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, there is no doubt that global warming is the result of human action. Should present conditions be maintained, the world will surpass the 1.5°C goal within the next decade. This does not mean that this goal is compromised.
The impacts of the climate crisis can already be seen around the world and if we don’t act now, we will continue to see its worst effects on lives, livelihoods and natural habitats. A global effort to reduce emissions will allow this goal to be achieved by the end of the century.
Constraining the global average temperature increase to a 1.5°C maximum requires emissions to be reduced by 45% until 2030 compared to the 2010 levels, and a consistent decline to reach net zero around 2050. These are ambitious goals, but within our reach.
Ending deforestation is our minimum commitment
Making the energy transition to clean and renewable sources does not suffice, we must go beyond and remove carbon from the atmosphere. Therefore, nature-based climate solutions are of growing importance, comprising both preservation and regeneration actions for ecosystems and forests.
In the Amazon, we must reach zero deforestation by 2030 and establish a new social contract anchored in nature-based solutions. The forest is much more precious and necessary when standing and Brazil can be an agricultural power without having to destroy it. We must focus on solutions in the context of bioeconomy and develop technologies that establish value chains that preserve the forest.
Clearly, it is not just about meeting the goals of the Paris agreement on climate change, but about safeguarding the well-being of future generations, and once again placing our country into geopolitics and the global economy.
There is strong convergence between the climate and biodiversity agendas
Brazil is where most life is produced on Earth. The Amazon accounts for 59% of such natural wealth, home to 60% of the planet’s tropical forests, 20% of fresh water and about 10% of biodiversity. Most of it remains unknown, both for Brazilians and for the global scientific community in search of solutions to the challenges of the 21st century.
Given the extraordinary potential that the preservation of forest biodiversity offers towards wealth and economic growth, the best way to protect this resource is to encourage the emergence of a green economy that includes native populations and urban centers in the Amazon.
Protecting it, and the peoples who defend it, is what protects us from an ecological collapse with planetary impacts; the Amazon is our most reliable and most economical life insurance. It is an ‘ecological hedge’ in Brazil and the world.
