The Amazon rainforest, the world’s largest tropical forest, is critical to global and national climate change mitigation efforts. Studies indicate that eliminating deforestation could avoid up to 2.14 gigatonnes of CO2 emissions in 10 years, generating about $18.2 billion in carbon credits by 2031. The possibilities for tackling the climate crisis also lie in the ecological restoration of degraded land in the Amazon rainforest: studies show that ecosystem restoration can lead to the capture of 931 million to 1.3 billion tons of CO2. Some studies support this restoration of degraded area, not to mention the benefit to local communities and the improvement of biodiversity.
