International Seminar: Green New Deal – a new green deal for the world and for Brazil

February 10, 2022
The origin of the term Green New Deal (GND) predates the pandemic, but it was US President Joe Biden who brought it back to the center of the debate. The term provides for U.S. leadership in promoting a sustainable economic model, with the goal of zero global emissions by 2050. To this end, the country must ensure that, by 2030, 100% of its own electricity is produced from clean, renewable, and emission-free sources.

Seeking to insert Brazil in the discussion and to advance in urgent agendas that act directly in the fight against the climate crisis and against socioeconomic inequalities, there is already a proposal for a new Brazilian green agreement. The “Green New Deal – Brazil” is centered on five axes – infrastructure, cities, land use and forests, fair and sustainable economic transition, and policy and regulatory changes.

The 20th edition of Sustainable Future Dialogues will present the proposal and discuss with society the opportunities for Brazil to advance in this approach.
