Rakel Caminha

Rakel Caminha is an artist from Manaus whose creations address social and ecological issues, as well as issues relevant to women’s experiences. She created the cover art for the single “Hutukara” by the Amazonas band Marambaya, which opened the plenary session she took part in. Hutukara means “the part of the sky from which the earth was born” and expresses part of the worldview of the forest peoples. “Hutukara is like a body in which everyone lives; there is no ‘outside.’ Everything is exchange, and we need to exchange with nature. In the same way, the Amazon is a reflection of the people who live in it, of its many interconnected cultures, while at the same time it is global,” the artist explains.
