Marcela Bonfim

Marcela works as a photographer and visual artist in Porto Velho, Rondônia. A Black woman, she is dedicated to the project (Re)discovering the Black Amazon: Black Peoples, Customs, and Influences in the Forest ((Re)conhecendo a Amazônia Negra: povos, costumes e influências negras na floresta), in the field of visual anthropology, which explores the formation and memory of the Black Brazilian population in the Amazon region. She explains that, before arriving in Rondônia in 2010, her image of the Amazon was limited to “wild nature, the Indian, nothingness.” However, she says it was in the Amazon that she began a process of becoming aware of her own identity.
